I know the Italians would love to take credit for this versatile squash, and although it is distantly related to the bottle gourd which Europe did have in pre-contact time (even Ancient Egyptians had them!), this "squash" is a New World native. Italian do have some of the best recipes for this verde veggie though--most of which are the best in world, better even than a great deal of Native New World treatments of them.
